Maria Sharapova (Rus) bt Laura Robson (GB) 7-6, 6-3 - The 17-year-old gave the Russian an early scare but couldn't keep the pressure up.

Shuai Peng (Chn) bt Elena Baltacha (GB) 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 - A battling performance swung against Baltacha right at the end.

M Johansson (Fra) bt H Watson (GB) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 - A distraught Heather, 19, suffered an elbow injury when the game looked hers for the taking.

P Kvitova (Cze) bt A Keothavong (GB) 6-2, 6-1 - Anne crashed out having never really making her mark on the game.

L Robson bt A Kerber (Ger) 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 - A tough game for the youngster but she held out for a second-round place.

A Keovathong (GB) bt N Broady (GB) 6-2, 6-4 - Keovathong wins a battle of the Brits that made sure we had a female rep in round two.

S Stakhovsky bt D Cox (GB) 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 - Dan Cox rallied a little after a bad start but was never any real threat to his opponent.

E Baltacha (GB) bt Mona Bartel 6-2, 6-4 - Elena did us proud as our main hope in the Ladies' title.

M Llodra bt J Ward (GB) 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 - James seems to have the familiar problem with mental toughness, seemingly piling the pressure on himself whenever he got himself into a commanding position.

F Mayer bt D Evans (GB) 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 - When he pulled a set back, we all held our breath, but it wasn't to be for Daniel Evans.
